To deliver its core features, the app does rely on a small number of functional platform services provided by Apple (iOS) and Google (Android), for example to display maps, to convert coordinates into street addresses, to process in-app purchases, and to keep a single anti-abuse counter in sync. Exactly what is sent, when, and to whom is described in detail below. None of this data is ever sent to Milevo (the developer).
Who is responsible
This application is developed and published by an individual developer. The responsible party within the meaning of applicable data protection law is:

What data Milevo processes
Milevo processes the following data on your device in order to provide its core functionality:
- Precise GPS coordinates — recorded as waypoints while a drive is in progress. These are stored locally in the app's private database (Apple SwiftData on iOS, Room/SQLite on Android) and are never transmitted to Milevo or to any analytics service. Limited, purpose-specific transmission to Apple or Google occurs only for map display and address lookup, as described under "Third-party platform services" below.
- Motion and step data — used in memory only to distinguish driving from walking and to prevent false drive detection (Apple CoreMotion on iOS, Google Play Services Activity Recognition and the device step sensor on Android). Step counts and activity data are processed transiently and are never stored on disk or transmitted.
- App preferences — distance unit, currency, deduction rate, notification settings, work hours, and similar settings. Stored locally (iOS UserDefaults, Android SharedPreferences). Not transmitted, except that a non-location anti-abuse counter is synced as described below.
- Total-distance counter — a single number representing your cumulative tracked distance, used to enforce the free-tier limit and to make it resist reinstalling the app. This number only (no routes, no coordinates, no personal data) is synced through your own Apple iCloud Key-Value Store (iOS) or Google account via Play Block Store and Android Auto Backup (Android), so it persists across reinstalls and device changes. It is stored under your own Apple/Google account and is not visible to Milevo.
Milevo does not collect your name, email address, device identifier, IP address, advertising identifier, or any other information that could be linked to your identity.
How data is stored and protected
All of your driving data is stored in the app's private, sandboxed container on your device. It is protected by the operating system's device encryption (hardware-level AES on both iOS and Android) and is inaccessible to other apps. There is no Milevo server and no Milevo-operated cloud storage.
Milevo does not perform background uploads of your routes or trip history. Your driving history never leaves your device except in the specific, user-initiated cases described under "Exports" and "Problem reports" below, and except for the purpose-limited platform requests (map display, address lookup) and the non-location counter sync described above.
Location access
Milevo requests "Always" / "Allow all the time" location access so it can detect drives automatically in the background. This permission is used exclusively for recording drive routes. Recorded location data is stored on-device; it is sent off-device only to Apple or Google for the limited purposes of rendering the map and reverse-geocoding (see below), and never to Milevo as the developer.
You can withdraw this permission at any time:
- iOS: Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Milevo.
- Android: Settings → Location → App permissions → Milevo (or Settings → Apps → Milevo → Permissions → Location).
Withdrawing the permission means drives can no longer be tracked automatically.
Third-party platform services
Milevo integrates no third-party analytics, crash-reporting, advertising, or tracking SDKs. It does use the following functional services provided by the operating-system vendors. Each vendor's own privacy policy governs data they receive:
- Maps display — Apple MapKit (iOS) and the Google Maps SDK for Android are used to draw the route map. Displaying a map sends map and location data to Apple or Google respectively. (Apple Privacy Policy, Google Privacy Policy)
- Reverse geocoding — converting GPS coordinates into a street address sends a coordinate to Apple's CoreLocation geocoder (iOS) or Google's geocoding service via the Android Geocoder API (Android), which returns the address. If no internet connection is available, Milevo stores the raw coordinates and retries when connectivity is restored.
- Location and motion — Apple CoreLocation/CoreMotion (iOS) and Google Play Services fused location and activity recognition (Android) provide the position and motion signals the app needs to detect and record drives.
- In-app purchases — Milevo Pro is sold through Apple's App Store (StoreKit) on iOS and Google Play Billing on Android. Payments are processed entirely by Apple or Google; Milevo never receives your payment-card details. Apple/Google return only a purchase/entitlement confirmation, which is stored on your device.
- Counter sync — the non-location total-distance counter described above is synced via Apple iCloud Key-Value Store or Google Play Block Store / Android Auto Backup, under your own Apple/Google account.
Apple and Google may also independently collect anonymised diagnostic and crash data through the operating system and the App Store / Google Play. This is governed by their respective privacy policies and is not controlled by Milevo.
Exports
You can export your data locally as a PDF, a CSV, or a .mil file (Milevo's own portable backup/transfer format) using the in-app export functions. Exported files are generated on your device and shared only through the operating system's share sheet. Milevo has no knowledge of where you send them and receives no copy.
Problem reports
If, and only if, you choose to report a tracking problem (via "Report a tracking problem" or the per-drive feedback option), the app prepares an email to milevoapp@gmail.com in your device's mail composer. That email attaches:
- a diagnostics log of recent in-app tracking events (such as GPS fixes, motion signals, and drive start/end decisions held temporarily in memory), and
- for a report about a specific drive, that drive's route as a .mil file.
Nothing is sent automatically. The diagnostics log exists only in memory, is never written to disk or uploaded on its own, and is transmitted only as an email attachment when you explicitly tap send. You can review or cancel the email before sending it.
Data retention and deletion
Your data is retained on your device until you delete it. You can delete individual drives within the app at any time. Deleting the app from your device removes all associated on-device data permanently, including the local database and all preferences.
The non-location total-distance counter may persist in your Apple/Google account (iCloud Key-Value Store / Play Block Store / Auto Backup) so the free-tier limit survives reinstalls; it contains no routes or personal data and can be cleared by removing the app's backup data in your iCloud or Google account settings.
Milevo does not maintain any server-side copy of your routes or trip history, so there is no additional deletion step required on our end.
Your rights
Under the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (revDSG) and, where applicable, the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), you have the following rights regarding your personal data:
- Right of access — you can request information about the data processed about you.
- Right to rectification — you can correct inaccurate data.
- Right to erasure — you can request deletion of your data.
- Right to data portability — you can export your data in a structured format (CSV, PDF, or .mil) directly within the app.
- Right to restriction — you can request that processing be restricted in certain circumstances.
- Right to object — you can object to processing based on legitimate interests.
Because all of your driving data is stored locally on your device, you can exercise most of these rights directly within the app or by deleting the app entirely. For any requests you cannot fulfil yourself, contact us at milevoapp@gmail.com.
If you believe your data protection rights have been violated, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the Swiss Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC) at www.edoeb.admin.ch.
Children
Milevo is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly process personal data from children. If you believe a child has provided personal data through the app, please contact us and we will take appropriate steps.
Changes to this policy
If this privacy policy changes materially, for example if a future version of Milevo introduces server-side sync or new data-sharing features, the updated policy will be posted at milevoapp.com/privacy with a new effective date. For significant changes, we will display a notice within the app. Continued use of the app after a policy update constitutes acceptance of the revised terms.
